Chapter 3 - Horse Life Cycle
A PF horse begins its life during breeding season, which takes place once each season
in the game, after the seasons racing is complete. At that time, stallion and mare
pairings are placed into a database and run through the breeding program, resulting in a
new foal that has inherited its traits from its parents. A new foal is listed on the horse
lists with a status of Foal.
The following season, foals become Yearlings. Yearlings may not race yet, and are
assumed to be in training.
Once horses become 2-year-olds, their status is changed to Racer. At this time they are
old enough to begin their racing careers. Please note that not all horses mature at the
same rate. A horse may be old enough to race, but may not be fully mature until much
later, so may not perform as well as expected or hoped due to immaturity.
Once a horse has become a Racer, it will retain that status until it is retired by its
owner, or reaches age 10, whichever comes first. Horses may continue to race through their
9-year-old season if their owner wishes it, but must retire after that.
Once a horse retires, its status changes to Breeder. Once retired, a horse may never
again be unretired or race, so consider carefully before deciding to retire a horse.
Retired horses may breed and produce foals until they reach age 21. At this time they are
removed from the game.
